8th observation

Time-4:54
Temp-55 degrees
Date-5/30/08
Location-Snake River Ranch
weather conditions-Very Cloudy
soil conditions-moist

Less worms were on the dirt road than before so this means that there weren't that many ducks or geese around the location. Except more and more mallard ducks have been appearing around my location and this maybe because of the snake river. In the rivers there are water spiders, also a larger amount of water have been in the streams so that also attracts the ducks and more animals like the elk. Mostly all of the trees have gotten their green leaves and also the oldest tress but not as much as the more newer trees. But the oldest trees maybe useful for the birds nest like the crows and hawks. So that they can lay their eggs there at a high elevation so that they are not in danger. But it doesn't matter because if one of them leaves to go get food then the other is left to take care them.

At this time it has been cloudy and some rain at times. Which means that ducks go out and find some food. Their were also small birds that would wait till the rain passed and they would see if any earth worms were out on the dirt road which there were a lot everywhere u looked there was one or two worms. This helps the ducks, birds, and geese.

Dandelion

Dandelion

The dandelion or also known as lions tooth, puffball, and blowball. Dandelions best maintains in moist place where there is a lot of sun. It can also survive in shade, dry place but not as well as in a moist location. Its stem has white milky fluids. Leaves are 5-25 cm long. This plant can grow nearly 12 inches. As it rains there is a root where it can capture some of the water so that it can stay well watered. It is also used as a medicine since the Roman times. It can treat the gall bladder, kidney, gallstones and many other things. Dandelions have grown throughout the Northern hemisphere and in other variety places. No one knows how they’ve spread in so many places. They appear in locations such as in pastures, lawns, waste ground, sand, rocks, sand, and in cracks of concrete.

6th Observation

Site: Snake River Ranch

Date: 5/19/08

Time: 4:30

Temp: 75 degrees

Weather: SUNNY!

Soil: dry

On the trees there are green leaves already!. But they are still small but not like before they have grown a lot more, during the day a bird starts to sing every afternoon it sounds like as if it would be whistling. There has been more ducks and geese. It seems like there are both female and male out in the field to find there nesting place for the mothers eggs, while one is laying down the other is looking if there is any danger.

Fauna Organism: Elk

ELK

The elk is one of the largest mammals in North America, Eastern Asia and also in the deer family. Its scientific name is Cervus elaphus. They usually live up in the mountains but when they don't have enough food they come down from the mountains to the valley. In their living environment there are trees, rivers and mountain. Some of the organisms that they eat are grass, acorns, bark, leaves, and buds from shrubs and trees. Some interesting facts are that they stay in a herd to watch each other and to protect each other from the predators, such as wolves. So as they stay in a herd, the elk take turns to eat, and what they do is have bigger elk outside of the circle to watch if they have a predator in sight. Elk have their antlers for a purpose, but only the males have them, so they can protect themselves from any danger and to fight other elk to win over the female. For females, it takes a dozen or more attempts, then by the fall of their second year they can produce one and they rarely produce two offspring. Females tend to isolate themselves from the main herd until the calf is large enough to escape from predators. The reason why the color of their coat is brown is so that elk can be camouflaged with their environment and not to be in danger with other predators. If they had a different color of hair then it would be easier for other animals to see it. The males weigh an average of 600-700 pounds and cows average weight is 500 pounds. Adult elk are 7-10 ft long from nose to tail, and while they are standing they measure 4.5 -5 feet tall. Their antlers reach to a width of five feet.

4th Observation!!

Time-4:17 pm

Temp-48 degrees

Date-5/14/08

Location-Snake River Ranch

weather conditions-Cloudy

soil conditions-dry/wet

During the afternoon there were some rain from time to time. This really helped to grow new and fresh green grass. Also during these couple of days dandelions have started to grow, in the fields you can see small spots that are yellow which are dandelions. The weather conditions have changed dramatically since the first observation because it has gotten a lot hotter. In the fields small rodents are living underneath the ground, so maybe that's why large birds have been flying around the fields for example some crows have been flying around where small rodents have been living in. As they fly around the rodents come out of there holes just to check if they are in danger not.
